De La gets Northern Cali on the board

The biggest crowd yet showed up for the D1 final and they got their monies worth. De La Salle handled their business in the first half, jumping out to a 24-7 half time lead.

The Spartans would extend that lead to 31-7 in the third quarter and it looked like the Spartans would run away from the talented bunch from Corona.

The Spartans were used to this. Being up 31-7 that is. They are not used to what happened over the last seven minutes of the third quarter and the first five minutes of the fourth..

Centennial responded with a 24pt run of their own to tie things up at 31 with 8.17 left in the fourth quarter.

Just when it looked like De La Salle would roll over They answered with one of their patent drives, going 80-yards in nine plays to retake the lead.

QB Mike MacGillivray finished off his high school career on a high note. MacGillivray was the starting QB when De La's national record 151-game winning streak was snapped back in 2004.

Mike hit wide receiver Noah Perio on a crossing route with five minutes left in the game for the winning score. It was his second TD pass of the game and De La had three in the game.

Perio took it in for a 25-yard touchdown and a six point De La lead. The official's decide to become a part of the game and they called an un sportsmanlike conduct penalty on Perio for doing a chest bump with another player after catching the TD.

A 15-yard penalty forced a missed extra point and Centennial had life. They promptly moved the ball down to the De La 30 before the Spartan D stiffened up.

Blair Wishom used this time to make his presence felt. First he burst through the line to tackle Bass for a five yard loss on fourth and two.

De La did nothing with the ball after getting it back and they were forced to punt the ball back to Centennial.

Centennial's last chance was ended by Wishom again. This time Blair intercepted the ball at mid field and the Spartans ran out the clock.

Turnovers cost Centennial all game.

Centennial put the ball on the ground the first time they had it and De La did what De La does. They put seven points on the board.

Quarterback Blake Wayne punched it in from a yard out a couple of plays later. Centennial would answer right back, driving 80-yards and cashing in when tailback Ryan Bass scored from a yard out.

It looked like De La Salle would run away and hide from Centennial over the next quarter and a half. Jr. cornerback Travis Carrie was every where during this stretch.

He got the ball rolling with an interception and return that set up a De La field goal. Carrie slipped out of the backfield the next time De LA had the ball and scored on a pitch and catch from 28-yards out to make it a 17-7.

After watching Tito Pica and Kylan Butler combine for over 2,000-yards and 37-touchdowns rushing during the 2007 season, Travis picked a great time for a coming out party.

Central Catholic runs out of gas against St. Bonaventure

The gave it a go, but with seven players playing on offense and defense Central could not get much going on offense in the second half of their 35-21 loss.

This was a 14-all tie at the half. The score stayed that way until KC Serna threw a 70-yard touchdown pass on third and 21 midway into the 4th quarter..

It was the first of three TD's scored by St. Bonaventure on either third or fourth down in the 4th quarter. The last touchdown came when tailback Darrell Scott took a pitch from Serna and threw it back to KC on 4th and 8 from Central's 16.

Scott ended his career in style. The number one ranked tailback in California rushed for a game high 150-yards and two TD's on just 17-carries, plus he had that game clinching touchdown pass.

Central got a great game from tailback Louis Bland (196-yards rushing) who ran hard all day while doing double duty as a DB.

Central had their chances, but two second half drives deep into St. Bonaventure's territory stalled on fourth down.

De La gets a wake up call

The Spartans got just what they needed. a team driving on them and scoring a go ahead touchdown. It had happened just once this season until Monte Vista's Drew McAllister went in from a yard out in the second quarter of the teams NCS semi final round playoff game.

De La has been blasting teams all year. Mission Viejo was the only other team to lead against De La this year. The Spartans continued to blast teams, ending the USC bound McAllister's career with a 50-15 win.

What Monte Vista did for De La was give them food for thought. You need good competition in order to best your best.

Oak Grove kept their season alive with a 35-21 win over Bellermine. Nevin Gardner was the man for Oak Grove. The tailback rush for 275-yards and two touchdowns.

Usua Amanam did his best to keep pace, but could only get 150-yards with two TD's for the Bells. Oak Grove wore down Bellermine, who could get only as close as 28-21 in the second half.

Second season about to start as playoff schedule is set

Berkeley High's wild finish and ACCAL championship won them a date with the top ranked team in the state. De La Salle.

The Spartans are a perfect 9-0 and they have been blowing teams out all year. De La was held scoreless in the first quarter of just one game all year, a 49-14 pasting of BVAL champion Pittsburg High.

James Logan grabbed the #2 seed in the 4A playoffs and they will open up with a home game against 6-4 Foothill. Monta Vista plays at HAAL champion San Leandro while EBAL champion Cal HIgh travels to play at Pittsburg.

In their 3A playoffs San Ramon Valley got the #1 seed while 9-1 Newark Memorial is seeded second.  Newark will host Washington (4-5-1) while San Ramon gets American.

The Mission Valley got a lot of love from the selection committee. Washington finished under .500, but a 35 all tie with San Ramon Valley early in the year must have carried a lot of weight.

Ygnacio Valley ended the season on a four game losing streak, but they got in to the playoffs and they will open with a game at #4 seed Bishop O'Dowd.

Las Lomas grabbed the top seed in the 2A playoffs and they will host Piedmont and their A-11 offense. Campolindo will play at first year program Heritage who grabbed a two seed.

In the West bay Bellermine Prep will get a chance to avenge their only loss of the season, a 24-20 defeat to their first round playoff opponent, Serra.

The Bells were riding high before Serra knocked them down a notch in both teams last regular season game of the year. For a complete run down of all the bay's playoff match ups click here

Say it ain't so

Is it really the last weekend of regular season high school football. All of the hard work, anticipation leading up to the start of the season seems like it was just yesterday.

If you are a senior, then it is magnified ten fold. Your last game, unless you play for a team headed for the playoffs it can be a day many of the players will never forget.

It is also rivalry week. Schools all across the bay are gearing up for the one team they have to beat. Pittsburg v. Antioch, Alameda v. Encinal, Foothill v Amador Valley, all big games and there are too many to list in this article.

A few teams face their moment of truth this weekend. Newark Memorial is 9-0, but they have not seen anything like James Logan, who they play at Logan next.

Logan is 9-0 and they have been blowing out teams ever since they got past Monta Vista in their season opener 37-21 in their season opener.

Logan has only been held to under 30 twice in 2007. They shut out Berkeley High 27-0 and the next week they beat Pittsburg 28-7.

A win seems too be all standing in the way of Logan getting a second seed in the D1 playoffs behind De La Salle. San Ramon Valley plays rival Monte Vista and if San Ramon wins they could sneak into the second seed, but look for them to be ranked third heading into the playoffs.

Berkeley High is in because they won their league, but what kind of seed awaits the yellowjackets. They did not win a game outside of the ACCAL.

Newark is 9-0, but they could get their feeling hurt if they lose to James Logan. At 9-1 and one you would think Newark would get in.

A blowout lose to Logan will not help their chances. With half the EBAL looking to get in to the D1 playoffs and San Leandro and Deer Valley ranked ahead of them a win against Logan will be what the doctor ordered.

The BSAL will come down to the last week when St. Patrick, St. Vincent takes their 9-0 record to Piedmont to face the 7-2, 5-0 BSAL Highlanders.

Piedmont uses a line up on offense that makes every player on the field an eligible player to catch a pass. That's right, you have a true spread offense with tackles and guards lining up all over the place.

A 7-2 record shows that something is working right. Piedmont scores 22pts a game with their offense. St. Pat's have been scoring 42pts a game so Piedmont's O will have to be in high gear to keep up.

Alameda will down the street to play against their good friends over at Encinal Nov. 9th at 7pm. Encinal has emerged from under the showdown cast by Pinole Valley in the ACCAL.

The Jets sit in second place behind Berkeley with one game to go. Alameda in a game behind Encinal (4-2, ACCAL). Both teams are 7-2 and the winner will make the playoffs.

The loser will have to hope and pray the selection committee see's things their way.

Squads set their sights on league titles

You can call it separation Friday. All over the bay area high school football teams took a big step toward locking down a regular season title in football.

The Bells for Bellermine assured themselves a share of the WCAL title with a commanding 43-21 win over Riordan in San Francisco Saturday.

The Bells went up 16-0 before Riordan tried to make a game of it. 16-14 was as close as Riordan would get.

Ygnacio Valley was rolling right along at 6-0 before being brought back to earth by Deer Valley. YV lost 12-0 to Deer Valley and they are now mired in a 2-game losing streak after falling 38-35 to upstart Heritage last week.

Now they host Pittsburgh High Saturday. YV has fallen to fourth place in the BVAL. Pitt leads the league with a 4-1 record and the can clinch at least a tie for the regular season title with a win over YV Saturday.

Salesian (Richmond) and Sacred Heart Prep (Atherton) square off for the Bay Football title Nov 3rd at 3pm in Richmond.

Salesian has not missed a beat with the graduation of running back Javid Best and they are 8-0, 3-0 in the BFL after getting past St. Elizabeth 27-22 Friday.

SHP 7-1, 3-1 BFL, slipped past Berean Christian 26-21 to set up the match up that will decide things in the BFL. Both teams sport the leagues best defenses.

Mt. Eden is making a run for a HAAL title. To get to the top of the heap, Mt. Eden will have to earn it. They face San Leandro and Bishop O'Dowd the last two weeks of the regular season.

San Leandro improved to 6-2, 5-0 in the HAAL with a 15-14 overtime win against a pesky Castro Valley. A win by San Leandro and they win the league.

If Mt. Eden can pull it out then there game against Bishop O'Dowd will be for all the marbles and the automatic playoff bid that comes with a league championship.

Piedmont and St. Patrick/St. Vincent seem to be headed for a title showdown next week in Piedmont.

St. Pat has rolled to a 8-0 record having been tested just twice this season. The got past northern section power Frendale 27-21 and St. Mary's (Berkeley) 23-14.

Every other game has been a rout. Piedmont is riding a six game winning streak after dropping the first two games of the season.

Piedmont hosts St. Patrick Nov. 9th at 7pm.

Things will become a lot clearer in the EBAL after this weekend. San Ramon Valley is in the driver's seat at 7-0-1, 4-0 in the EBAL.

All that stands in their way of a league title is a game against 3-5 Livermore. Cal High will try to keep their titles hopes alive when they face off against Amador Valley.

Monta Vista will play Foothill in another big EBAL contest Friday night. Cal High is 4-1 in league play while Monta Vista, Foothill and Amador Valley are all 2-2 and playing for their playoff lives.

Riordan off and running in the WCAL

I should say they are off and passing. Riordan maintained pace with Bellermine atop the tough WCAL with a 20-3 home win over Serra Saturday.

If you looked at the stats it would be hard to believe Serra lost by as much as they did. Riordan used big pass plays to make the most of when they had the ball.

Serra had a 284 to 185 advantage in yardage but all of their long drives only amounted to three points. The Padre's first drive of the game went 63-yards, but Serra needed 21-plays and it took 12:10 to complete.

It lead to their only points of the game, a 37-yard field goal. Riordan's D did the rest. The have one of the bay area's best giving up only 13.6pts a game.

Riordan QB Darius Bell only competed five passes in 14 attempt's, those five went for 114-yards setting up Riordan scores.

It was a mistake prone first half. Serra blew every chance they had to put more points on the board. They fumbled twice inside the red zone in the first half.

It was 3-0 Serra at the half. Bell hit Anthony Ghanayem for a 25-yard gain down to the one. Johnny Greene ran it in the next play to give Riordan a 7-3 lead.

Bell hit Daniel Cannon the next time they had they ball for a 32-yard pass play down to Serra's five. Bell would end the drive by sneaking it in from a yard out on 4th and goal to make it 14-3 Riordan.

If Riordan gets by Archbishop Mitty next week a match up against Bellermine awaits them with a possible berth in the state finals down the road on the line.

San Ramon Valley slowed Cal High's roll Friday night with a hard fought 10-9 road win to take the lead in the EBAL race.

This defensive battle came down to a missed field goal. Cal High looked like they would force overtime when QB Nick Spalliero hit wide receiver Andrew Hunting on a 31-yard touchdown pass with 15-seconds left in the game.

Spalliero took his team 97-yards in the final drive, converting two fourth downs along the way, in the last ditch drive of the game.

San Ramon Valley potent offense was held in check. QB Joe Southwick completed 11 of 28 passes for 107 yards, and one interception.

It was San Ramon's defense that got into the end zone when linebacker Kai Cummings' fumble recovery in the end zone that gave the Wolves a 10-0 halftime lead.

James Logan (6-0) continued to roll with a 65-0 pasting of Mission San Jose. The Colts have a big Mission Valley match up with 4-1-1 Washington next week.

Newark Memorial kept pace with Logan in the MVAL, getting by American 29-21 improving to 6-0. Newark handed Washington their only loss of the season and they play Logan 11/09/07 on the road.

Oakland Tech got the better of Skyline 21-13 in a match up of OAL hopefuls. Skyline turned the ball over five times in the loss.

Oakland Tech had eight sacks in the game and they look to be a league favorite along with McClymonds and Castlemont High.

Mack pounded Fremont 45-0 to get their first win of the year. Mack has played one of the toughest schedules this year and their 1-5 record shows that.

Mack first five opponents were a combined 21-10 before they ran into a 0-6 Fremont team. Mack takes on a Skyline team that has fallen to the bottom of the OAL at 0-6 next week.

Cal High stakes a claim to the EBAL

The Cal High football team got a leg up on the competition in the EBAL with a 19-13 win over Monte Vista. The win improved Cal High's record to 5-0, 2-0 in league play.

Leroy Green led the way with 127-yards rushing and two TD's. He scored on a 16-yard run in the second quarter to make it 6-3 Cal High.

Green sealed the victory with a halfback pass to Cameron Cook for a 56-yard touchdown that made it a 19-6 ball game.

Monte Vista showed signs of life when QB Drew McCallister drove the team to a touchdown with 3:34 left to play in the game, but 19-13 was a close as they would get.

Alameda comes up just short at Pinole Valley

Playing in the biggest game to date in 2007 the Alameda Hornets went out to take on Pinole Valley in a match up of two teams with designs on a ACCAL football title.

Pinole was coming off a 6-all tie with Berkeley High and they did not want to fall behind Alameda in the standings. Pinole jumped out to a early lead and held on in the fourth quartet when Alameda tried to make a comeback.

Pinole Valley running back Deante Purvis missed the Berkeley game with an injury and he did not waste much time showing just how important he is to Pinole's offense.

Purvis threw a seven yard half back option pass to Delton Edwards Jr. for the games first touchdown. The score came after Alameda tried and fumbled a reverse play on the games opening kick off.

Alameda answered right back to tie the score at seven, but Purvis made sure they would not be tied for long. The next time Pinole had the ball Purvis caught a short slant pass and he turned it into a 85-yard touchdown.

Niko Aumua held on to this pass depite th defense by a Pinole Valley defensr in Pinole's 27-24 victory over AlamedaAlameda's 6'7" wide receiver Niko Aumua tried his best to keep his team in the game.

He caught two TD's and blocked a punt for a Alameda safety in the game.

Aumua dropped a would be touchdown pass near the end of the first half that would have made things a little more interesting in the second half.

Aumua did just about everything he could to help his team win. He also had an interception for a touchdown in the second half for the final score of the game.

Pinole Valley scored all of their 27pts before the half to lead 27-16 heading into the break.

Berkeley High Glad to see the ACCAL

It has been a rough start to the 2007 football season for Berkeley High. A schedule that has included some of the bay area's best teams has produced a 0-3-1 record in their first four games.

That 1 was a 6-all tie with ACCAL rival and highly ranked Pinole Valley at home last week in both teams league openers.

Pinole missed a chance to get a head start on what looks to be a three team between Berkeley, Pinole and Alameda High.

The EBAL race got under way over in the East Bay and Cal High looks to see what they can do the rest of the way after opening league play with a big win over Foothill 31-7.

San Ramon Valley got back on track against Amador Valley, winning 23-13. San Ramon let American (Fremont) come back to tie them last week 35-all.

Cal High now sits at 4-0, 1-0 in the EBAL and in a first place tie with San Ramon and Monta Vista, who outlasted Granada 49-35 in both teams league openers.

Cal High is doing it with defense. They give up just over ten points a game through the first four games of the season. Amador ranks second in the EBAL (15).

James Logan continue to roll with a 27-7 pasting of Pittsburg High on the road last weekend. Senior QB Rashad Evens had another great game.

He ran for two scores and passed for another in the easy win.

Salesian High (Richmond) has moved on with Javid Best, one of the fastest players to come through the area with a 4-0 start after out lasting Castlemont 10-6.

Salesian won on a bad punt by Castlemont late in the third quarter. Robert Kerbs tried to field a bad snap and run for a first down but he was stopped short at the 23.

The next play Salesian QB Josh Smith hit Akel Hillany on a fade route for the winning score. Kerbs would block a punt late in the fourth quarter to set Castlemont up at the Salesian 35.

Castlemont could only get as close as the 13 before a fourth down pass in the end zone fell to the ground with just under a minute to play.

St. Mary's (Stockton) heads west, beats St. Francis 20-13

The Rams came out and shut down a potent St. Francis offense to win on the road in a Thursday night match up. It was a big win for St.Mary's who improved to 3-0.

Rams tailback Chris Wilson scored twice, including the game winning touchdown in the come from behind win. St. Mary's defense was the star of the game.

They never let St. Francis get into any kind of rhythm on offense. They only points St. Mary's gave up were a fumble in the end zone after a long reception by St. Francis and an interception return for a score.

Oak Grove dumps Palo Alto 27-7

They were a little to fast for Palo Alto. Oak Grove ran away from Palo Alto holding them to just 107-yards of offense in the game.

Oakl Grove pounds Palo Alto 27-7

Oak Grove running back Nevin Gardiner (Above, yellow) had more rushing yards (112) by himself. He also scored twice on one yard runs.

Palo Alto's big running back, Sione Mataele was held to only 14-yards on 10-carries. This was a sloppy game at the start. Both teams made turnovers before Oak Grove settled down and took over the game in the second quarter.

The OAL took it on the chin week three getting swept. It was not as bad as it looked. Oakland Tech and Castlemont looked good in defeat.

Tech lost 28-26 to Pinole Valley. Tech head coach Delton Edwards watched as his son Delton Edwards Jr. scored they last two TD's for Pinole Valley in their comeback win in Oakland.

Castlemont hosted a good Windsor team and played well on defense, but they could not put many points on the board in their 22-8 loss.. They have improved since their opening season loss at Ygnacio Valley.

McClymonds is still looking for their victory of the year after falling 33-12 to Arroyo (San Lorenzo). This came one week after playing well against Pinole Valley.

Skyline got shut out by Foothill 31-0 at home. Foothill got a 30-yard interception return from Jon Lynn and two touchdown passes from quarterback Brain Kruger in the win.

Oakland High lost 33-21 to Healdsburg while Fremont fell 42-6 to Newark Memorial.

Not so fast

Berkeley High came into the 2007 football season with a new coach and high hopes of winning a lot of games in 2007. Alonzo Carter will have to wait at least another week for his first win as head coach at Berkeley.

Photo by Eric TaylorFoothill opened up a tight game in the second half to win going away 30-7.

Fullback Rob Andrews pounded his way to 157-yards rushing and three touchdowns in the Foothill victory.

Berkeley scored first when Eyonte Teague ran it in from 18-yards out. Berkeley could have been up big. Foothill turned the ball over three times in the first quarter and B-High could only get on TD.

It was all Foothill after that. Foothill gave up only 139-yards of offense against Berkeley High.

Staying in the ACCAL, Alameda backed up their comeback win at Bishop O'Dowd with a 40-13 win over San Lorenzo.

St. Elizabeth continues to bounce back from a winless season in 2006 by beating Tomales 22-20 at Burrell Field in San Leandro.

Sam Blackmon scored twice, once on a 15-yard interception return to help St. Liz improve to 2-0 in 2007. Head coach Fred Sims has one of the smallest rosters in 11-man high school football every year.

San Ramon Valley made short work of San Leandro in what was thought to be a good match up in Danville Friday night.

Working out the kinks

It was a rough start to the season for several football teams around the bay. Good teams got pounded in their season openers as teams learned that they have a lot of work to do if they are going to make the playoffs.

De La Salle sat back as Serra went down to Clovis and blasted Buchanan 55-7 last week. Serra came into Concord ranked second in the Bay only to play like any other Bay team that has come through De  La in the last 15-20 years.

De La Salle's defense looked as sharp as ever in their 40-22 win over Serra

Turnovers and quick Spartans scores mixed in with solid De La Salle defense added up to another De La victory. Serra came in with a vaunted offense led by QB Cody Jackson.

Jackson rushed for 218-yards and two touchdowns. A great game huh?. Runs of 93 and 95-yard TD's came against second and third stringers when De La was already up 34-0.

De La saw how the LA teams passed the ball in all three divisions at the CIF state championships last year and head coach Bob Ladouceur, being the great coach that he is, took notice.

The Spartans came out in a spread offense with the wide many times against Serra. Known for a powerful running game, De La knows the real glory is to win state and to do that you will have to be able to throw the ball.

It is not only for the offense. The defense needs to practice against it in practice in order to be able to defend against it in a game. Michael Czyz benefited the most from this new offense.

The senior wide receiver caught second quarter TD passes of 55, 27 and 16-yards. The Spartans used a two quarterback rotation. Senior Mike MacGillivray was perfect in the first half. going seven for seven with two TD's in the first half.

Blake Wayne, just called up from JV, ran for 69-yards and threw one TD in his varsity debut.

Serra was not the only good team to struggle in their first game. Hayward lost 56-7 to Cal High. Castlemont lost 51-0 to Ygnacio Valley. Sacred Heart Cathedral beat a good Burlingame squad 31-10.

Valley Christian gave Pittsburg High something to think about with their 33-14 win. The score was 19-14 at one point, but Pittsburg did not score in the second half.

James Logan got one of the bigger wins of the first full weekend of high school football over Monta Vista Friday night.

The Colts gave Foothill all they could handle before losing in the playoffs last year and they opened up against another EBAL football power ( Monta Vista).

This was supposed to be the Drew McAllister show. McAllister, Monta Vista's QB and a senior could not do anything about James Logan's speed.

The Colts used that advantage to win 37-20. I think the players from Monta Vista are still trying to catch their breath.

Berkeley High got their season off to bad start. Let me take that back. Berkeley's offense got off to a shaky start. Berkeley High's defense played great in their 14-8 loss to Deer Valley.

B-High's Jammer Smith fumbled the opening kick off and Deer Valley recovered on the three. Sonni Woods scored on play later and it was 7-0 just like that.

Woods (105-yards rushing) scored the next time Deer Valley got the ball and it was 14-0 with seven minutes left in the first quarter.

That was it for Deer Valley, Berkeley could not do much of anything until the fourth quarter. Berkeley QB Michael Williams hit Anastacio Zamba for a 39-yard pass for the final score of the game.

Berkeley will now travel to play Foothill, a 25-22 loser at Novato Saturday. Novato went 12-1 in 06', their only loss was a season opener to Foothill that cost them a trip to the D2 CIF state finals last year.

The loss of 17 players from the 2006 squad did not hurt Novato against Foothill. Jr. QB Jeff Stephens made his first start for the varsity and played great.

He threw three TD's to lead the way in the entertaining game. Foothill was without their top two quarterbacks (injuries) and played with the new coaches son (Sean Mannion) at QB.

Head coach John Mannion replaced Matt Sweeney, one of the better high school coaches around, after 16 very successful season's.

Cardinal Newman escaped Modesto with a 35-35 tie against Central Catholic in a battle of D3 teams. Newman QB Max Pond was 27 of 49 for 338-yards and one TD to go along with 86-yards rushing.

These could be the two top teams D3 in Northern Cali and Newman should get some credit for not losing on the road. Central had their chance but they could not covert ann extra point after tying the game with 2:12 left in the fourth quarter.

Big games all over the bay as prep football gets underway

It is that time of the year again. Friday night lights is about to go prime time once again. The quest for a shot at a state title is back on.

Will De La Salle once again run through northern Cali on their way back to the state finals on in LA. The host CCS power Serra Sept. 7th at 7pm.

Serra got a head start on their season by going to down to Fresno and blasting Buchanan 41-7. I am sure that got De La's attention, but they have been here before.

Who ever wins that game, last year De La beat Serra in a closer than it looked 40-28 game, will be off and running to start the season.

Serra features senior tailback DeLeon Eskridge. Eskridge rushed for 1,461-yards and 23 TD's, earning WCAL running back of the year.

Of course a De La loss would be huge news in high school football. One team trying to keep the train rolling is Castlemont out of the OAL.

The Knights had a great year last season going 8-3 while making the playoffs in the OAL. Their only real loss in 2006 was that of their head coach, Amin Denny.

Denny would lose his battle with cancer, passing shortly after the season ended, but he brought life to a program that had a lot of talent wasted during the past 15-years.

Denny got players to come out for the team and stay eligible to play all four years in school. If football season was year round, Amin might still be alive today.

I am sure the kids on the Castlemont squad help keep him alive a little longer with their play the last couple of years.

The Knights open up on the road at Ygnacio Valley (5-7) and Encinal (2-8) before hosting 9-2 Windsor Sept. 21st.Castlemont will play for their coach Amin Denny who passed away after a long bout with cancer in 2006

The Knights return seven starters on both sides of the ball and they are primed to go far again this year. Led by senior Chris Little (6-2, 210) and sophomore offensive lineman Deandre Ward (6-4, 310), Castlemont should get better as the season goes along.

Berkeley High and Deer Valley hook up in Berkeley Sept. 7th in both teams season openers. Berkeley sports a new coach, Alonzo Carter, who came over from McClymonds (Oakland) after putting that program back on the map.

He will attempt to do the same thing for a Berkeley High squad that needs a lot of guidance. Everybody knows that Berkeley has the talent to win, but keeping a good coach there has always been a hard thing to do.

Berkeley High will have to be on the ball from the first game of the season. After opening up with Deer Valley (10-1 in 2006) Berkeley High plays at Foothill (12-1 in 2006), James Logan (8-3 in 2006) before heading back home to play ACCAL League rival Pinole Valley (11-1 in 2006).

Their first four opponents had a combined 41-6 record last year. That's a tough way to start the season.

Foothill (Pleasanton) will be looking to keep rolling after their long time coach Matt Sweeney stepped away from the program after the 2006 season.

Foothill opens up at North Bay power Novato. Novato lost 21-3 last year to Foothill before reeling off 12 wins in a row. Novato gave up only 10-points in their final 12-games.

CARSON , Calif. The 2006 CIF State Football Championship Bowl Games are less than a week away, and the participants for the inaugural event have been selected, CIF Executive Director Marie M. Ishida announced Sunday.

Below are the six schools which have been selected to participate in the 2006 CIF State Football Championship Bowl Games.

“I was impressed with the selection committee, added Event Director Ken Gunn. “They showed depth of knowledge, thorough evaluation of all potential entrants and worked exceptionally well together.

“We're going to have three great football games next week.”

DIVISION I: DE LA SALLE, CONCORD vs. CANYON, CANYON COUNTRY

De La Salle High School (13-0) was the Class 4A East Bay Champion from the North Coast Section. The Spartans are coached by Bob Ladouceur. They will face Canyon High School (11-2, 4-0) which was the Northern Division Champion from the Southern Section. Canyon is coached by Harry Welch.

De La Salle was selected based on its undefeated record and strength of schedule as its opponents fashioned a combined record of 95-50. The Vikings won three intersectional games against Mission Viejo (SS), Palma (CCS) and Serra (CCS). Nearly 50% of its opponents' points have come in the fourth quarter when the outcome of the game was already decided. Nine of its 13 opponents reached their section playoffs.

Canyon was selected based on its strength of schedule. Its opponents were a combined 101-55. Five of its opponents were league champions, while 11 of its 13 opponents reached their section playoffs. The Cowboys' two losses were to Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks by one point and St. Bonaventure by seven in the first three games of the season. Since then, they have 10 straight victories. Canyon, champions of the Foothill League, defeated the same team, Moorpark, in both its first and last games of the season.

DIVISION II: PALO ALTO vs. ORANGE LUTHERAN

Palo Alto High School (12-1, 6-0) was the Open Division Champion from the Central Coast Section. The Vikings are coached by Earl Hansen. They will face Orange Lutheran High School (13-1, 4-1) who was the Pac-5 Division Champion from the Southern Section. Orange Lutheran is coached by Jim Kunau.

Palo Alto was selected based on its strength of schedule and its wins over Palma and Oak Grove in the section playoffs. Palma had been one of the top ranked teams all season, and the victory against Oak Grove in the section finals avenged an early season loss. The Vikings play in the CCS Open Division, which is comprised of the section's top eight teams.

Orange Lutheran was selected based on its strength of schedule. Its only loss of the season was in double-overtime to league opponent Servite. It won what many consider to be the toughest league and division in the Southern Section. Eleven of its opponents reached their section playoffs.

DIVISION III: CARDINAL NEWMAN, SANTA ROSA vs. OAKS CHRISTIAN, WESTLAKE

Cardinal Newman High School (13-1, 6-1) was the Class 3A Champion from the North Coast Section. The Cardinals are coached by Paul Cronin. They will face Oaks Christian High School (14-0, 5-0) which was the Northwest Division Champion from the Southern Section. Oaks Christian is coached by Bill Redell.

Cardinal Newman was selected based on its strength of schedule and its head-to-head victory against Central Catholic of Modesto. In addition, the Cardinals avenged their only loss of the season with a victory against Montgomery of Santa Rosa in the section playoffs. Ten of their 13 games were against teams that reached their respective section finals, and they defeated six teams that were league champions.

Oaks Christian was selected based on their undefeated record and their strength of schedule. They currently have a 45-game win streak and could have up to nine seniors sign NCAA Division I scholarships. Ten of their victories were against teams that reached their section playoffs. The Lions began to state their case for a state berth in week three of the season when they defeated highly regarded St. Bonaventure, 59-13, in a nationally televised contest.

“The Selection Committee made a commitment to a complete process during which all 47 schools would be discussed thoroughly, said Ishida.” I applaud the 41 other Section champions for their performances this season.”

All three state football championship games will be played Saturday, December 16, at Home Depot Center in Carson . The Division III game will begin at 11 am , followed by Division II at 3:00 pm and Division I at 7:30 pm .

To be eligible for the state championship bowl games, teams must have been their respective CIF Section Champion. There were a total of 47 Section Champions – 23 from Northern California and 24 from Southern California . A complete list of all eligible schools is on the final page of this release.

Guidelines used to select the teams included won-loss record, strength of schedule, head-to-head competition and common opponents. Various rankings and media reports were also used in the selection process. Margin of victory or anticipated fan support were not factors in team selection.

All games will be broadcast live on FSN Prime Ticket ( Southern California ) and FSN Bay Area ( Northern California ), with the lone exception being the Division I game which will be shown on tape-delay in NorCal due to a previous FSN scheduling commitment. It will air live on FSN Bay Area Plus for those who have access to satellite or digital cable.
