Andre Ward shines bright in Oakland

The Bay area came out to the Oracle Arena in Oakland to watch their next great hope take to the ring and show the world what they already know. Andre ward, Super Middleweight, is one of the best boxers in the world and he is ready to take that next step in his career.

Ward won a 12-round decision against his toughest fighter to date, Edison Miranda, in convincing fashion. Ward was the better fighter from the opening bell. The only trouble Ward had all night was getting head butted in the first round and tripping in the 10th.

The head butt put a stream of blood on the face of Ward, but it would be Miranda that took much of the pounding all night. Andre won on all cards and he left no doubt who was the better fighter.

Ward showed he had a lot more power then people have been giving him credit for. Everybody knew about his speed and technique, but Ward had a confident Miranda flinching by the third round.

Who knew how Ward would handle a 12-round bout. Andre has been brought along slowly under the careful watch of his trainer Virgil Hill and this was his first twelve round affair. 12-rounds was no problem for Ward who looked as spry in the 11th and 12th rounds as he did early in the fight.

Mixing up his fighting styles, Ward fought both Southpaw and orthodox, scoring well with his left hand. Edison was able to get a couple good shots in of his own.

The sixth round was Miranda’s best.

Edison was able to get through with a couple of rights crosses to the head of Ward that forced Andre to take a step back and regroup. He would bounce back fast and from then on it was all Ward.

Edison had boosted that he would knock out Ward in the 10th round, and Ward did hit the canvas in the tenth, but it was due to Miranda’s feet and not his fists. Ward and Miranda’s feet got tangled up and Ward tripped and fell near the end of the round.

It was quickly waved off and the over 7,500 fans breathed a sigh of relief. Ward hopped up and continued his onslaught on Miranda.

Ready for prime Time

Winning an Olympic Gold medal in a sport like boxing brings all kinds of expectations from fans around the world. Are you going to be the next great champion, This question has dogged 2004 Light Heavyweight gold medallist Andre Ward since he won his medal almost four years ago.

Ward slow, but sure rise to the top of his profession took another step towards reaching his goal of  A title shot when Ward stopped hard punching Rubin Williams in the seventh round of the Super Middleweight bout.

4,538 fans came out to the HP Pavilion in San Jose to watch Ward handle Williams with ease. Williams could not make the 168-pound Super middle weight limit, but Ward agreed to fight anyways.

A cut opened up over the left eye of Williams in the second round led to the fight being stopped by the referee with five seconds to go in round seven.

Ward will now turn his attention to Jerson Ravelo, an Olympian from the Dominian Republic, in the Cayman Island's June 13th. Ravelo is 18-2 with 12 KO's since turning pro after the Sidney Olympic's.

STAR BOXING EXPECTS RODRIGUEZ- COLLINS NO-CONTEST TO BE RODRIGUEZ TKO WIN New York-Monday September 10, 2007

Star Boxing announced today that Delvin Rodriguez has challenged the “No-Contest” result that was declared after the fight between Delvin Rodriguez 20-2-1 (12KO's) and Keenan Collins 12-2-1 (8KO's) was stopped between the 2nd and 3rd rounds.

The fight was aired live on ESPN2's “Friday Night Fights” from the Utopia Paradise Theater in the Bronx, NY on August 24. A vicious right hand from Rodriguez opened a deep cut above the left eye of Keenan Collins in the second round.

Rodriguez went on a measured head and body attack and had Collins ready to go as the bell sounded to end the round. Collins corner realizing their fighter was in trouble urged the ringside doctor to stop the fight. The referee, Eddie Claudio announced the cut was caused by an accidental head butt and the fight was ruled a "No Contest."

A review of the fight footage confirmed what many who saw the fight knew, the cut was caused by a clean right hand from Rodriguez, and, at no time during the entire fight did their heads collide. Delvin Rodriguez' camp has respectfully requested a hearing, with the NYSAC, which is scheduled for Tuesday, September 11.

It is expected that the NYSAC will review the tape and consider reversing the “No Contest” to a TKO win for Delvin Rodriguez. “The only just result here would be to declare the bout a TKO win for Delvin. Boxing needs to continue on the path of credibility and correcting injustices in the sport is crucial to its success,” said Joe DeGuardia.

Andre Ward leaks a little blood, then wins by TKO

Andre Ward made short work of Julio Jean with a third round TKO at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Ca in front of over 4,000 entertained fans. Ward improved to 11-0 since turning pro after winning the 2004 light heavyweight championship.

More photo's click hereWard, now fighting as a Super Middleweight, felt his own blood trickle down his face for the first time as a pro when Jean caught him with a head but in the second round.

It was all she wrote for Julio from then on.

Ward switched it up on Jean, fighting southpaw in the opening two rounds. The head butt brought out a different Andre Ward in the third and final round. Ward went back to the conventional method and a flurry of punches later Jean was done mid way into the third round.

Ward had backed him into a corner where hit landed at least 15-punches without Jean even throwing a single punch. The ref finally stepped in to stop it and the scheduled eight rounder was over.

Ward has had trouble making weight at the Middleweight class and he feels that stepping up to the Super Middleweight class is better suited for him. "I feel stronger with the extra weight. I have more power with the same quickness." said Ward after the fight.

Ward was on the under card. In the main event Jesus "Chey" Rodriguez from Salinas pounded away at an out classed Carlos De La Cruz for 10-rounds winning on all three judges score cards. Cruz's nose was a bloody mess by the second round.

Chuy, a light welterweight, improved his record to 14-2. In the super featherweight division, Shadi Hamsho of LA improved to 9-0 with a victory over Carlos Musquez of Sacramento in a four round fight.

It was a good night for fighters from the city of Oakland. Jose Grace beat up on Allen Medina enough to get the decision and Paul Vasquez scored a first round TKO of Israel Spencer from San Diego.

The fight was attented by boxing legend James "Lights Out" Tony and new world champion Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero. Salinas native Guerrero won the IBF featherwieght belt with a victory over Spend Abazi in Copenhagen, Denmark this past February. Photo's click here

MARCH 29, 2007 THE AMERICAN METAL & IRON FIGHT NIGHT AT THE TANK HP PAVILION SAN JOSE, CA

World class boxing returns to the Bay Area when the HP Pavilion hosts another Fight Night at the Tank in San Jose March 29th.

2004 Olympic champion Andre Ward will be highlighting the card with his eight round bout with Julio Jean (7-10, 3KO's) who is from New Haven, CT. Ward is a perfect 10-0 in his young career.

Andre has never fought more than six rounds in his pro career and this eight rounder is a step up for Ward who's last three fights have gone the six rounds they were scheduled. Ward out classed his opponents each time and this eight rounder is just one more step towards getting ready for a shot at a world title.

Andre is progressing very well and he loves fighting in the bay area, so close to his home town of Oakland. "I need Oakland and the bay area. I draw a lot of strength from my people out here and I would love to have a title fight out in Oakland some day." said Ward at the SF Golden Gloves last year.

A title fight is in the works for Ward. There is still a lot of work ahead, like this eight rounder Thursday night. Those two extra rounds means that Ward has to be in that much better shape and I am sure that Andre trained as hard, if not harder for this fight than any other in his career.

That's the only way Andre Ward knows how to do it. All out, give it your all and good things will happen. That attitude has taken him to a gold medal and it has him on a path to a world championship down the road. Tickets click here

Trained by his father, Eddie Sr., Chambers established himself as a fan favorite at the famous Blue Horizon in Philadelphia where he won all 17 of his bouts in the legendary arena. In his 24th pro fight, “Fast” Eddie won the IBU and Vacant Pennsylvania State Heavyweight titles by unanimous decision over the tough and durable Robert Hawkins – in his only 12-round bout to date.

He subsequently decision ed Andrew Greeley before stopping Ed Mahone and back in August, his last outing of 2006, he KO 'd the upset king, Domonic Jenkins. He faces a tough opponent in the 26-year-old Rossy, who holds the New York State Heavyweight title. Rossy won the title with a TKO over Gary Bell in just his 10th pro bout in February 2006.

Rossy closed the year in December with his sixth straight 2006 victory against another KO victim, Edward Gutierrez in the fourth round of a non-title tilt. Another rising Goossen Tutor prospect is heavyweight contender, Cristibol Arreola (18-0, 16 KO's), who is scheduled to open the ESPN2 telecast against the heavy-handed banger from Cincinnati, Ohio, Zakeem Graham (10-1-1, 7 KO's).

The 25-year-old Riverside, CA product -- whose goal is to someday become the first Mexican world heavyweight champion -- has stopped his last six opponents. “The Ghost” maintains championship status as Salido tests positive for steroids! RobertGuerrero.com Bay Area Ca, Nov 08, 2006 Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero will immediately fight for his title after its been reported that Orlando Salido, who captured Guerrero's IBF belt this past Saturday, tested positive for steroids.

Guerrero, know for his exceptional punching power stated, “I hit this guy with some nice shots early in the fight and he didn't budge. Usually when I hit guys with shots like that, they slow down. It had me thinking. It's sad that he had to go to desperate measures in order to compete with me. I just thank Jesus Christ for coming out of this fight unharmed.

The Nevada Athletic Commission is doing a great job because everyone who steps in the ring puts their life on the line. I'm just happy that my next fight will be a world championship fight. I'm fighting at the elite level in boxing and it's a shame that Salido would have to use steroids to compete.” - Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero

PROMOTER GOOSSEN TO PETITION
WBO TITLE ELIMINATOR

WBO #1 HEAVYWEIGHT WORLD CONTENDER KRASNIQI
PULLS OUT OF SEPT. 16 “TIGER” THOMPSON FIGHT

Los Angeles, August 10th – Dan Goossen, promoter of world rated American heavyweight boxer Tony “The Tiger” Thompson, announced today that he plans on filing an immediate petition with WBO President Francisco “Paco” Valcarel, Esq. on his fighter’s behalf as the result of the organization’s top-ranked contender pulling out of his scheduled September 16th bout with Thompson in Germany.

Universum’s Klaus-Peter Kohl, promoter of the “Universum Champions Night” event scheduled to be held in Stuttgart’s brand new Porsche Arena, released an apologetic statement announcing that #1 WBO contender Luan Krasniqi has rejected the terms of an offer to fight the sixth-ranked Thompson and caused cancellation of not only the main event, but the entire show.

"I'd been hearing rumblings that Krasniqi was hesitant to fight Thompson, and unfortunately it was true,” said a disgusted Nate Peake, Thompson’s co-manager along with NBA All-star and New York Knick, Steve Francis. “Tony has been in training camp preparing for the fight, anxious to go to Germany to take the next step in his career toward the title.

This is a very disappointing development for Tony and Team Tiger. We’ll just keep moving forward though." If Goossen gets his way, Team Tiger may not have to wait very long to find out what’s next.

"This is very unprofessional of Krasniqi,” Goossen insisted. “Tony accepted every condition that was thrown at us, because he knew that he would knock him out and immediately get his chance at the world championship.

“I'll be requesting the president of the WBO to call for a title elimination bout with any top available contender willing to take on Thompson for the right to challenge champion Sergei Liakhovich in his long overdue mandatory title defense.

“You can't be a #1 contender and pull out of commitments like Krasniqi did (for the reason he did) and be rewarded," said Goossen. “He took himself out of the picture and the shot at the title. It’s Tony Thompson’s turn to show
the world who he is.”

Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero gets even

The Ghost took a slight detour in his road to a title fight with a 12-round loss to Gamaliel Diaz last December in San Jose. The Ghost is back on track after a action packed 6th round TKO in front of 3,500 entertained boxing fans.

The Ghost drops Diaz with a stunning body blow

The two fighters came out in the first round like they were fighting for their dinner. Robert wanted to prove the his loss to Diaz was a fluke and Diaz wanted to show that he deserved that title shot in his near future.

The Ghost wasted little time with Diaz, dropping him twice in the first round, the second knock down was with a body shot that was a sign of things to come.

A bad sign for the Diaz camp. Gamaliel was able to shake off that first round and from rounds three through five was giving Robert all kinds of trouble. "Diaz has an awkward fighting style that was tough for me to figure out, but I stayed with my game plan and pounded his body as much as I could and it paid off for me tonight." said a happy Guerrero after improving to 18-1-1.

The work Robert was putting in paid off in the sixth when he put Diaz away with a hard left to the body that left Gamaliel doubled over for several minutes after the fight.

There were five fights put on by promoters Justin McCray and Goossen Tutor Promotions at the Arena in Oakland and all five were knockouts, three were of the first round variety.

The Brothers Dirrell (Anthony and Andre) impressed the crowd with wins. Both from Flint Michigan, Anthony now 9-0 with a perfect nine KO's, dropped James Morrow (9-3-2) twice in the first round before the bout was stopped with 1:37 left in the round. Andre gave the crowd a chance to check out a couple of the ring girls by fighting into the third round before stopping Marcus Don Hall (11-2) with a body shot. Andre won the 2004 Olympic Bronze as a middleweight and he improved his record to 7-0 with 4 KO's.

Andre (Left) and his brother Anthony improved to a combined 16-0 with wins in Oakland

Karim Mayfield, a welterweight making his pro debut fresh off a championship in the 2006 San Francisco Golden Gloves quickly put away Chris Mickle in the second round of their six round bout.

The Ghost will try to get even with Gamaliel Diaz June 23rd at the Arena in Oakland

This will be a fight for a chance at a title fight down the road in this rematch of a very entertaining bout in Dec. 05 that Diaz came away with a one point split decision 12-rounder.

It was the first loss for Robert "The Ghost" Gerrero (17-1-1, 9 kO's) while Diaz improved to 20-1-2, 10 kO's). This upcoming bout has been sanctioned by the WBC as a Championship elimination fight as well as a NABF Featherweight Championship bout.

The winner of this one has a WBC Championship bout looming in the near future. The bout is part of Showtime's Shobox series The New Generation.

Andre Ward improves to 9-0 with 6th round TKO

Fight Night at the Tank

A vicious body attack combined with violent uppercuts were the key punches that smoothed the progress of Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero’s (17-1-1 10 KO's) annihilation of Sandro Marcos (25-14-2 21 KO’s) at the HP pavilion in San Jose Ca.

The Ghost, coming off his first loss, had something to prove to himself and all his fans and critics. In the first round, Guerrero dominated his opponent with a rangy jab and devastating shots to the body followed by nice uppercuts. That same trend continued in round 2, but it was a violent left uppercut that landed flush on the face of Marcos that everyone was talking about, as blood spewed into the front row.

As round three started, Guerrero dropped the native of Mazatlán MX with a destructive left to the body. With pain on his face, Sandro got up only to be pummeled by an onslaught of punches, as referee John Schorle halted the bout with 2:06 left in the round.

“After my first loss, some people were skeptical of my talent. I had to send a message to the boxing community, that I’m worthy of a title shot. All top dogs, bring it on” – Robert Guerrero

Next stop for Guerrero will be a fight at the Oakland Arena June 23rd televised live on Showtime (Opponent TBA). For more information visit www.robertguerrero.com or www.goosentutor.com

Olympic dream starts now for Boxing hopefuls

San Francisco's Bill Graham Civic Auditorium was the site of some great boxing Saturday night as Mexico and the United States fought an eleven bout match.

Mexico came away with an 6-5 win and all the fights were entertaining. For all of the American fighters this was their jump off point in their quest to make the United States Olympic team and get on that plane to China in a couple of years.

The team is made of youngsters from all over the country. A couple of fighters got a chance to fight in front of their home town fans. Stan Martyniouk and Brandon Gonzales are both from Sacramento and they both won in their fights Sunday night.

"It was great to get a chance to fight in front of my friends and family. It was a tough fight and the Mexican boxer (Jorge Perez Sanchez) was taller then me. It was the first time that I fought a fighter taller then me." said a happy Martyniouk after his fight.

It was a good test for Stan and he passed with flying colors out fighting Sanchez. "I wanted to make sure that I did not get caught up in a brawl with him," said Stan. "I stayed away and used combo's on him".

Not brawling was also the key in Daniel's Jacobs win over Marco Hernandez in the 165lb weight class. The talented boxer from New York City won somewhat of a slugfest in a very entertaining fight.

"I just wanted to come out and get my self started on the right foot. I fought the #1 ranked fighter in Mexico in my class tonight and I came away with the victory." said Jacobs after his fight.

Daniel was able to claim control of the fight in rounds two and three when he calmed down and started to fight his fight. By the middle of the 3rd round of the four round bout Jacobs was well ahead and he was just trying to stay out of harm's way in the form of the hard punches being throw by Hernandez.

"I was trying real hard to not get in a punching match with him. I wanted to stay back and out box him, which I did. It felt great to get in the ring and start my Olympic career." said Jacobs.

Brandon Jacobs stepped into the ring to fight Ventura Vasquez as the last fight on the card and he sent the American fans home happy with a win in the 178lb class.

The young man showed the USA Olympic coaches that he is ready to represent the country in the next Olympic games by pounding Vasquez in the four round bout.
