San Jose ST. loses a heartbreaker to #14 Boise St.

For the second time in as many years San Jose St. gave highly ranked Boise St. all they could handle before losing at the end. San Jose St.

Adam Tafralis threw for 173-yards and three TD's in San Jose St.'s 23-20 loss to #14 Boise St. SaturdayBehind 149-yards from sophomore running back Ian Johnson, Boise St. overcame a 20-12 Spartan fourth quarter lead for the victory.

San Jose St. got on the board first when Adam Tafralis hit James jones with the first of his three touchdown passes at the start of the second quarter for a 7-0 lead.

Boise St. would answer with to field goals and the teams went into the half with San Jose St. up 7-6.

Johnson gave Boise St. the lead when he took it in from the 2-yard line.

The Spartans responded with 13-points in a row thanks to Tafralis two second half TDD's, the last one a 10-yarder to Jones with 14:21 left in the game.

Plenty of time for a team that averages 41pts a game right?. Wrong, San Jose St. made Boise St. work for everything they got. The Spartan's last TD was set up by DB Christopher Owens picking of Boise St. QB Jared Zabranski and returning it 25-yards down to the Bronco's 4.

San Jose St had a chance to put Boise St. away but running back Yonus Davis had a 73-yard touchdown run called back because of a block in the back in the fourth quarter.

Down 20-12, Boise St. saw their chance at a BCS Bowl fading away into the South Bay night when they turned to their play maker and he responded.

Ian Johnson ran the Bronco's down the field as Boise St. took over eight minutes off the clock. Zabranski hit Jerard Rabb for the two point conversion and we had a tie game with 5-minutes left.

Despite their high ranking, nobody on Boise St. took the Spartans lightly, or over looked them coming in to the game.

"This was a big win for us. We knew that San Jose St. would be tough. THey are a good team and they have been playing well this season. This was a jut check win for us. On the road, down at the half, we showed each other what we are made of today." said Boise St. QB Jared Zabranski, who was 14 of 20 for 180-yards, one pick and a one yard touchdown run.

There was some bad news for the Bronco's. Ian Johnson, their fantastic sophomore running back suffered a collapsed lung against San Jose St. That will be a huge loss for Boise St. down the stretch.

San Jose St. earns first road win since 2003

They have taken care of the home front, going a perfect 5-0 in San Jose on the season. The Spartans became bowl eligible with a rare victory on the road.

The Spartans pitched a shut out in the second half of their 31-21 win over New Mexico St.New Mexico St does not represent the cream of the NCAA crop, but when you have not won a road game in almost three years, a win away from home is a win.

The Spartans (6-2, 3-1 WAC) got 177-yards rushing and a TD from running back Yonus Davis in the comeback victory.

New Mexico St has not won a WAC game since entering the league in for the 2005 season, but they held a 21-18 lead as late as the fourth quarter.

With 12-minutes left in the game San Jose St. got a touchdown from their special teams when Patrick Perry blocked an Aggie punt that Jeff Clark picked up at the two, scoring the go ahead touchdown to give San Jose St. a lead they would not give up.

The Aggie's came out of the gate strong, scoring on a 29-yard pass play from Holbrook to Glynn with (9:29) left in the first quarter.

Yonus Davis came right back and scored from 25-yards out to even things up. spent the next quarter looking like they would run away from San Jose ST.

Holbrook threw two more TD's and it was 21-7 New Mexico ST. with 12:39 left in the 2nd quarter. Those were the last points the Aggie's would score.

Adam Tafrails was just 9 of 16 for 105-yards, but he threw for a TD, seven yards to Callier to make it a 21-15 Aggie lead and he ran one in from a yard out to end the scoring.

Now comes the cream of the WAC crop. High flying Boise St. comes in at 9-0 after lambasting Fresno St 45-21 Wed. night.

San Jose St got rewarded with a ESPN2 Game and the exposure that TV brings. Last year Boise St won a shoot out with over 1,000-yards of offense combined between the two teams.

San Jose St showed that they could hold their own with the Bronco's last year, but this is a new season with an even bigger challenge for San Jose St.

The more you, the bigger the next game becomes. The more wins you get, the better the bowl game you get to play in. Some say a Boise St. loss knocking them out of a BCS Bowl would hurt the WAC and schools like San Jose St, but nobody on the Spartans cares about that.

It is one thing to surprise a team, like the Spartans might have done last year against Boise St. This year Boise St. will be ready for San Jose.

Boise St. is in the mix for a BCS Bowl bid and they can't afford to lose to anybody left on their schedule. The Spartans and Boise St. have the WAC's two top scoring defense's. Boise St. has given up 150pts on the year while San Jose St. has given up 152.

The big difference is in the offense where Boise St has out scored San Jose St. 363 to 215. The Spartans have the league's top two offenses in back to back weeks.

San Jose St. has the tough job of playing on the road at Hawai'i (7-2, 5-1 WAC) Nov.18th. The Rainbows have scored a league high 426pts. and they will put the Spartans D to the test.

The Spartans continue their hot start

John Broussard had five receptions for 167-yards and two touchdowns in San Jose St. 31-10 win over SDSUSan Jose St. broke a seven g game losing streak to San Diego St. with their commanding 31-10 win Saturday.

The Spartans got touchdown receptions of 47 and 68 yards from John Broussard and a defense that pitched a shutout in the second half.

That is the way to finish off ball games. There has been no let down after the win over Stanford.

San Jose St. kept San Diego St. winless. San Jose St. QB Adam Tafralis completed 17 of 21 passes for 234 and two scores.

Broussard caught his first TD of the game on an option play thrown by split end james Jones. That made it 7-0 San Jose ST. with 5 minutes left in the first quarter.

Patrick Perry went in from the one yard line seconds into the second quarter to put San Jose St. up 14-0. San Diego St. scored 10-points in a row to make it a 14-10 game at the half.

Tafralis came alive in the second half throwing for both of his TD's. The first was a pretty 68-yard pitch and catch that Broussard ran under and then away from the San Diego St. defenders to make it a 21-10 game in the 3rd quarter.

San Jose St. hosts a 0-5 Utah St. team Oct. 14th that has been outscored 185 to 28. It will be the Spartan's second bye in two weeks. That is almost unheard of and it comes right before San Jose ST. begins their league season.

San Jose St. comes back to beat Stanford 35-34 in a thriller

This is what Spartan head coach Dick Tomey had in mind when he took on the head coaching position at San Jose St. No stranger to Stanford or the Pac 10, coach Tomey backed up the near win at Washington with a home victory over a Stanford Cardinal team that seems to be heading nowhere.

That's not what it looked like after the Cardinal went up 27-7 early in the second quarter. San Jose St. took a 7-0 lead only to fumble a punt and not even touch a Stanford kickoff that lead to Cardinal two TD's.

San Jose St. has seen games like this before. Get down big to a big name team and just go away quietly. Spartan tailback Yonus Davis would not let that happen. He rushed for a career high 184-yards on 23-carries and a TD.

San Jose St. had four rushing TD's to go along with 351-yards of offense on the ground. Five different players scored for San Jose St, the last and most important TD was James Jones 42-yard scamper that saw him criss cross the field almost twice before finally reaching the end zone.

That score came midway through the third quarter. It came after Stanford had the first of the their two turnovers. The second turnover was just as costly.

Spartan DB Dwight Lowery made up for his fumbled punt earlier in the game to pick off Stanford QB Trent Edwards pass in the back of the end zone with 1:29 left in the third quarter to preserve the one point win.

Edwards had a good day for the Cardinal. He passed for 242-yards and four touchdowns, but they were not enough to get Stanford a win.

Spartan QB Adam Talfris had a great day. He finished 14 of 16 good for an economical 115-yards with a touchdown rushing and passing.

He got the Spartans on the board first, finishing off the game opening drive with a seven yard TD run. San Jose St. then forced Stanford to punt and that is when the Spartans started to have issues with their special teams.

Stanford reeled off 27 straight points behind three Edwards passing TD's before Yonus Davis got San Jose St on the comeback trail with a six-yard TD run.

The second quarter saw the teams combine for five TD's , the last was when Tafralis hit James T. Callier just before the break that made it a 34-21 Stanford lead at the half.

San Jose St scored the only points of the second half.

San Jose St. football season in 2006 will have a fresh new look. The Spartans have gone out and brought home a fine crop of high school talent for their football team.

It is a turn for the better in San Jose. The Spartans have long sought after the top JC talent in the state, but getting high school seniors into the program as freshmen is the best way to build a strong foundation if you plan on winning in college football.

San Jose ST. did not have to go far with two of their top three freshmen coming in. Dominique Hunsucker, a running back that prepped at nearby Valley Christian High and Jalai Beauchman, a wide receiver from Bellarmine Prep choose to continue there football careers close to home.

Skyline running back Cameron Island will join Beauchman and Hunsucker on the Spartans roster. Island looks like he will be the jewel of the class.

He has already made an impression on the rest of the San Jose St. squad. Island rushed for 60-yards and a TD on 6-carries in the teams final preseason scrimmage before last week.

Even when they were getting blow out by Foothill and McClymonds last year, Island would not let his team down. He prevented Skyline from getting shut out at least three times by scoring TD's in the second half.

Photo by Eric TaylorHe is also very, very fast. Island has made it to the CIF state finals in the 100m dash in each of his last two years of high school.

He was on a 100m relay state championship squad as a sophomore.

The stocky running back should cause problems in the WAC for the next four years.

That is what head coach Dick Tomey and the Spartans fans are hoping for. It has been awhile since San Jose St. has contended for a bowl game and with all the talk about the future of the program just a few years ago, the Spartans are on the road back to respectability.

San Jose St will have to be on the ball early. They open on the road at Washington against a team that is looking to recapture their own winning ways. U-Dubb's fans will be  expecting a win over San Jose and they will pack the house up in Seattle Saturday.

The Spartans will come home and kick off a stretch of four straight home games in six weeks when Stanford comes calling Sept. 9th. San Jose St will not hit the road until Oct. 21st, when cross the state line and play defending league champion Nevada.

Boise St. punt returner Marty Tadman returned this punt 44-yards to set up Boise St's winning field goal as time ran out against San Jose St.

Yonus Davis ran for 51-yards on 11-carries. against Boise St.

San Jose St. dropped their season opener to UC Santa Barbara 75-67.

Tim Pierce scored 18, but A;ex Harris had 25 for UC Santa Barbara who were down by as much as 12-points in the game.
